Soothing a Cold Sore
|
|
Nothing can curl your lip like a cold sore. These painful fluid-filled blisters pop up around your mouth when a virus in your body triggers them.
Most cold sores will get crusty and heal on their own after a week or so without causing a scar. Until then, you can temporarily ease some of the pain by holding an ice cube directly on the sore. Over-the-counter topical products also can numb the tender area.
Other options from your doctor can help if you get struck by cold sores several times a year.
Are you feeling like a sore loser? You might be able to kiss future outbreaks goodbye by wearing sunscreen, since sunlight can set off an outbreak of cold sores. Other things that can trigger these sores are fever, physical trauma, stress, illnesses, and your menstrual cycle.
