Childhood Peanut Allergies: Some Pointers for Parents

Childhood Peanut Allergies: Some Pointers for Parents

A peanut allergy is a common—and dangerous—allergy that often develops in childhood and generally lasts a lifetime.

If your child suffers from a peanut allergy, here are some strategies for protecting her:

  • Check food labels carefully for the presence of peanuts or peanut oil. Another name for peanut oil is arachis oil. If you have questions about products, contact their manufacturers.
  • Watch out for Chinese, Thai, African, Indonesian, Mexican, and Vietnamese dishes. These often include peanuts or peanut oil. And even those without peanuts or peanut oil may have been contaminated with them during preparation.
  • Consider avoiding sunflower seeds. Many companies use the same equipment to produce both sunflower seeds and peanuts.
  • If your child has a reaction, get emergency care for her right away.
