Fill Up on Fiber for Your Heart

A low-fat, low-cholesterol diet can significantly reduce women’s risk of heart disease. Eating lots of fiber also helps. Combining these three diet strategies can help women cut heart disease risk by almost 30%.

Studies show that fiber may protect women’s hearts by lowering cholesterol, reducing blood clotting, and slowing carbohydrate absorption. For the best heart-protective results, women need about 25 to 30 grams daily. A diet rich in a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can do the trick. Here are a few ways to bulk up:

  • Eat whole-grain cereal topped with fruit for breakfast.
  • Snack on raw veggies and fresh fruit with the peel.
  • Substitute peas, beans, and lentils for meat-based dishes.
