Fall 2003 Calendar

Register for classes in advance by calling A Woman’s Place at 920-498-4205 unless otherwise indicated.

To ensure your place in the programs, fees must be received FOUR days prior to class date. Please send class fee to: A Woman’s Place, 1727 Shawano Avenue, Suite 101, Green Bay, WI 54303.

Class Cancellations: In the event a class must be cancelled, registrants will be notified in advance and an appropriate credit or refund will be issued.
Credit Policy: Individual class credits will be issued if A Woman’s Place cancels a class or you have a valid medical excuse from a doctor. Class credits must be used within six months of the cancellation date.
Refund Policy: Full refunds will be given only if A Woman’s Place cancels a class. A $10 processing fee will be charged for any exceptions.

Everywoman’s Journaling Program
Tuesday, September 9, from 1 to 3 p.m., or 6 to 8 p.m.
Tuesday, October 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., or 6 to 8 p.m.
Our mental and physical health is affected by our bodies’ responses to life experiences of all kinds. Journaling for health combines reflections and feedback into actions that increase our well-being. You’ll receive a free journal, pen, and guidebook on how to journal proactively, courtesy of the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation (WWHF) Rural Women’s Health Network. Space is limited.

A Woman’s Heart: Stroke
Tuesday, September 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
About 700,000 Americans will suffer a stroke this year, and women will account for six out of 10 stroke deaths. Learn how to identify the warning signs of stroke and what you can do to reduce your risk. Hear from those whose lives have been impacted by stroke.
Presenters: Peter Fergus, MD, cardiologist, Green Bay HeartCare; Dee Geurts-Bengston and stroke survivor Katie Huepchen, American Heart Association volunteers

Another Option: The Certified Nurse Midwife
Tuesday, September 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Certified nurse midwives help low-risk women to labor and give birth, provide care to mom and the baby before and after birth, provide routine gynecological care for women and more. Visit one-on-one with Prevea Clinic’s certified nurse midwife, Marta Brace. Explore whether the certified nurse midwife option is right for you.

Is What I’m Feeling Anxiety?
Tuesday, November 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
If you’re experiencing worrisome thoughts, tension, fear, or panic, or aren’t feeling like yourself, you might be suffering from anxiety. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S. Learn more about anxiety, its symptoms, and treatment.

Get-Togethers

Feldenkrais: Awareness Through Movement
Wednesdays, September 24, October 1 and 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. or 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.
Attend this Feldenkrais series to become more in tune with habitual movement patterns and learn new options to improve coordination, relaxation, and flexibility. Loose clothing, blanket or mat, and two towels required.
Presenter: Michelle Vine, physical therapist, St. Mary’s Hospital Rehabilitation Services
Fee: $36 for three-class series

Osteoporosis Management Program
Thursdays, September 25, October 2, and October 9, from 3 to 5 p.m.
This three-week series is designed for individuals diagnosed with osteo- porosis or osteopenia (bone loss). Each week will feature an educational component, a Q&A session, and 30 minutes of exercise appropriate for individuals with osteoporosis. Please bring a mat to lie on. A signed permission slip or prescription from your doctor is required to participate in the exercise sessions.
Presenters: Jodi Parker, pharmacist, St. Mary’s Hospital; Sara Ehlert, physical therapist, St. Mary’s Hospital Rehabilitation Services; and Jean Bouche, registered dietitian, St. Mary’s Hospital.
Fee: $40

Dreams: A Path for Enhancing Creativity and Tending the Soul New!
Friday, September 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Using guided meditation and simple forms of creative expression, discover how dreams cultivate and guide our creative and spiritual life. Participants are asked to bring a written summary of a memorable or emotionally significant dream. All other supplies will be provided.
Presenters: Tricia Matthew, ordained Presbyterian minister, artist, and dream consultant; Donna Kuelz, artist, spirituality workshop leader.
Fee: $60

Yoga for Stress Management
Mondays and Wednesdays, October 13 to November 5, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.
Learn how yoga can help you manage your pain and stress. This class includes meditation, guided imagery, education, and physical movement. Please bring your own yoga mat, and pillow or blanket. Space is limited.
Instructor: Silvia Stoffer, RYT 200 hours, certified in integrative yoga therapy
Fee: $75 for eight sessions

A Woman’s Place Wellness Book Club New!
Tuesday, October 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Join our experts as they discuss books on health, wellness, and self-improvement. Call to register. Then, stop by our resource center to pick up your book, read it, and take part in the discussion. Our featured book is The Gift of the Red Bird by Paula D’Arcy.

Taking Care of You: Powerful Tools for Caregiving
Thursdays, October 16 through November 20, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
This six-week course was developed by the Wisconsin Alliance for Family Caregivers with the focus on you—the caregiver. It teaches you how to care for yourself while caring for a parent or a spouse. Space is limited. Register by calling the Aging Resource Center of Brown County at 920-448-4300.

Educational Health Screenings

Bone Density Screening
Thursday, September 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (by appointment)
Bone density of the heel is measured using ultrasound to help determine whether you may be at risk for osteoporosis. While this is not a diagnostic exam, a health care professional will discuss the results with you and answer your questions. Recommended for women age 40 and older.
Fee: $15 per person

Cardiovascular Screening
Tuesday, October 21, from 7 to 11 a.m. (by appointment)
Knowledge is key to reducing your risk for cardiovascular disease. This screening will measure your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels and include a lifestyle assessment. A cardiac registered nurse will review the results with you. Fasting is required.
Fee: $15 per person

Natural Family Planning

Maybe a Baby—Think Ahead!
Wednesdays, September 17 and November 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Learn how to plan and prepare for a healthy pregnancy. Topics include nutrition, healthy lifestyles, the couple relationship, financial planning, and time management.
Presenter: Sue Costello, MS, St. Mary’s Hospital women’s health educator
Fee: $10 per couple

Girl Talk
September 20, October 18, or November 22, from 9 a.m. to noon
This program is for girls ages 10 to 12 and their mothers (or other significant female adults). Focus is on changes that occur as a girl matures. Topics include growing up, menstruation, communication, and friendship. Mothers and daughters separate for part of the program—girls do a craft activity while moms meet for a discussion.

Parenting Your Preschooler New!
Mondays, September 22 and 29, October 6 and 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The healthy relationships you create with your preschooler can last a lifetime. Learn the importance of listening to your children, dealing with their feelings and gaining their cooperation. Space is limited.
Facilitator: Jodi Kaftan, MS, director of St. Mary’s Early Childhood Center
Fee: $30 includes a copy of the book, How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk

Fertility Awareness
Wednesday, October 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Learn the physical and emotional signs of fertility and infertility and how to chart female fertility patterns and cycles. Open to couples and individual women.
Presenter: Sue Costello, MS, St. Mary’s Hospital women’s health educator
Fee: $10 per couple

Girl Talk for Moms
Wednesday, November 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
This class is designed for mothers of middle school girls. The focus is on promoting communication between mothers and their preadolescent daughters.
Facilitators: Sue Costello, MS, St. Mary’s Hospital women’s health educator and Judy Lehnert, BS, YWCA parenting educator.
Fee: $15

Support and Encouragement

These groups gather to offer encouragement, information, and support on specific concerns or areas of interest. All groups are FREE. Register in advance at 920-498-4205.

Elizabeth Ministry
Elizabeth Ministry offers companionship and support to women during times of personal crisis. Women are assigned a volunteer partner who has gone through a similar experience such as miscarriage, infertility, or hysterectomy. The volunteer provides friendship and emotional support with this one-on-one service. Please call Sue Costello at 498-4203.

Look Good…Feel Better
Mondays, September 8, October 6, November 3, and December 1, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
As a national American Cancer Society (ACS) public service program, Look Good…Feel Better helps women receiving cancer treatments learn how to manage the appearance-related side effects of those treatments.

Mother-to-Mother Series
Wednesdays, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
• September 17: Sleep, Baby, Sleep
• October 15: Breast-feeding and Returning to Work
• November 19: Avoiding Common Breast-feeding Problems
• December 17: Growth Spurts, Teething, and Separation Anxiety
Join other breast-feeding moms and support each other so everyone can meet their breast-feeding goals. Bring your baby!

Breast Self-Examination Class
Mondays, September 22, October 20, and November 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Learn the proper technique of breast self-examination using educational breast models. Individual topics are also discussed.
