Show Pollutants the Door

To save energy and lower utility costs, many homes today are built with fewer outdoor air “leaks.” But when there isn’t enough outdoor air coming in to carry indoor air out, pollutants are left to sit and collect. The solution? Proper ventilation—all year round. Here are some ways you can promote circulation:

  • Turn on window or attic fans when the weather permits.
  • If you have a window air conditioner, keep the vent control open when it’s running.
  • Keep gas and kerosene space heaters well ventilated.
  • Run the furnace fan continuously, regardless of temperature.
  • Always turn on exhaust fans when cooking or bathing. If you don’t have a fan in the kitchen or bathroom, crack a window instead.
