Green Bay, WI, – St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center was recently awarded the Environmental Leadership Circle Award from Practice Greenhealth (formerly Hospitals for a Healthy Environment) at the opening of the CleanMed 2008 global conference held in Pittsburgh, PA. These Awards honor health care’s top environmental health systems, health care organizations and hospitals. St. Mary’s Hospital is one of only 27 hospitals nation-wide to earn this recognition.
“The Environmental Excellence awards are tangible proof that eco health care is good for the planet and good for patients and staff,” said Bob Jarboe, Executive Director of Practice Greenhealth. “The Awards are an opportunity to showcase ourselves as a green and sustainable industry and even though we are far from done, we believe that good work deserves to be recognized every step of the way.”
St. Mary’s Hospital was given this prestigious award for the second consecutive year for increasing their overall recycling rate to 40 percent and for initiating an 81percent recycling rate for demolition materials and recycling in preparation for the current west wing construction project. In addition to extensive recycling and continuing with making medicine mercury free at the St. Mary’s Campus, new systems were also introduced for bio-friendly sharps disposal and a new surgery transposal system among many other eco-friendly projects.
