Pacers Walking Club 2009-2010 Season

Join the Pacers Walking Club at Bay Park Square. All ages are welcome to join to walk inside the mall, track their laps between September and May and be eligible for prizes. There are also monthly “Ask the Expert” presentations on the first Wednesday of each month from 8:30-9 a.m., (next to the food court.) Staff will be available to take blood pressures those days beginning at 8 a.m.

To join the Pacers Walking Club, contact Traci Demlow at St. Mary’s Bone & Joint Center, by E-mail: [email protected]. Invite your friends and family to join. You can join at any monthly Ask the Expert meeting, as well.

Prime Mall Walking Hours are:
Monday-Saturday 8-10 a.m.
Sunday 9-11 a.m.
Walk anytime during mall hours.

Calendar of “Ask the Expert” presentations for 2009-2010 season:

The season kick-off event is Wednesday, September 9 at Bay Park Square, Outside Younkers Furniture Gallery and food court (Note this is the 2nd Wednesday for this month only, due to late Labor Day Holiday)

September 9  Kick-off – You CAN Exercise with Arthritis presented by Deb Young, Physical Therapist Assistant, St. Mary’s Hospital. Deb will discuss: Why it is important to exercise, types of exercise, precautions, Heat or Cold? What does what? Followed by time to answer your questions and demonstrate a few simple exercises.

October 7Stretch Before You Walk presented by Prevea Sports Medicine Pete McMahon PT, LAT, CFMT
The importance of stretching to keep your muscles and joints healthy. We’ll try a few good stretches to get you started.

November 4 Taste Temptations for the Holiday Season.
A chef from St. Vincent Hospital,
will share tips on healthy—and tasty!—holiday meals and treats. 

December 2 – Oh My Aching Back – What is Causing that Pain? 
Presented by Rita Christensen, FNP-BC/Advanced Pain Management
who will share information about anatomy and how to minimize annoying back pain.
Rita is a board-certified family practice nurse practitioner who has experience in a number of medical specialties, including postoperative patient management, critical care and cardiac care and she has taught at St.Vincent Hospital and Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College.

January 6 – Joint Replacements presented by Prevea Health Orthopedic Surgeon Eric Nelson, MD
Learn what’s new in joint replacement technology.

February 3 Diabetes Diet Portions: How Much is Enough?
A dietitian/diabetes educator from St. Mary’s Hospital will cover this much requested topic. Come and learn the latest in diabetes management with your walking program.

March 3 Managing Foot Pain Prevea Health Podiatry, April Borchardt, DPM will discuss types of foot pain, causes and treatments; plus ways to relieve discomfort and improve walking.

April 7 – When your foot hits the ground….everything changes. How to deal with foot and ankle pain, by Dr. Padraic Obma.

May  5
– Lifeline, Safety and Security for Seniors
A representative from St. Vincent and St. Mary’s Home Health services will share safety and security tips for seniors. Information about the Lifeline personal safety system will also be discussed.

Bay Park Square Walking Trail
1 Lap = 6 tenths of a mile: Walking the inside perimeter of the mall and in the 4 major alcove wings: Shopko, Kohl’s, Younkers and Younker’s Furniture Store. Call the Bone & Joint Center with any questions.

This year’s prizes were again chosen with an eye toward what can be mailed. We thought this would make it easier for club members to receive their prizes.

25 laps–McDonalds dollar coupon

50 laps– Clip-on flashing safety light

75 laps– McDonalds dollar coupon

100 laps– Eco-friendly, cloth grocery shopping tote

150 laps–McDonalds dollar coupon

250 laps–McDonalds dollar coupon

300 laps–Subway certificate

Every 50 laps thereafter will alternate a McDonalds dollar coupon or a Subway certificate

Most laps walked–Bay Park Square Mall Gift Card to buy new shoes!
