Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Low-Dose CT Lung Screening?
It is a type of x-ray that produces detailed images of your lungs with limited radiation.

Do I need a referral?
No referral is necessary. However, you should discuss with your primary care provider if this is right for you.

Where does the screening take place?

Green Bay and northern region
The lung cancer screening consultations take place with a Green Bay Oncology provider at any HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Center locations throughout Northeast Wisconsin.

The CT Scan is performed by HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay at a convenient outpatient clinic location or at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.

Sheboygan area
The lung cancer screening consultations take place at the offices of Matthews Oncology Associates and Sheboygan Cancer & Blood Specialists at 1621 N. Taylor Drive in Sheboygan. The CT Scan is performed at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, 3100 Superior Ave. in Sheboygan.

What are the possible outcomes for the screening?
Your screening will have three possible outcomes:

Negative screen: No concerning nodules for lung cancer were identified. Given that you are still at risk for developing lung cancer in the future, we currently recommend a repeat screening yearly for two more years.

Positive screen: A lung nodule was detected that may require additional testing. We will meet with you to discuss the results, answer any of your questions and inform your primary care provider. Any required services following positive results will be coordinated with your provider.

Clinically important abnormality: Whether your screen is negative or positive for lung nodules, we may detect other unsuspected abnormalities that may require additional follow-up, such as other lung abnormalities, lesions in the blood vessels, liver, bone or other structures. We will send the results to you and your provider. Further medical care should be discussed with your provider.
