A Short Primer on Pilates
Pilates, an exercise first practiced by professional
dancers, has gone mainstream.
There are many different “schools” of Pilates. But the centerpiece of this form of exercise is, in fact, your center. It focuses on movements intended to strengthen muscles in the torso. Strong muscles in the back, buttocks, and abdomen may improve posture and reduce chances of injury. The exercises also can help with balance and coordination. Plus, a new study shows that Pilates training is particularly good for improving flexibility.
You do the exercises on a mat or using resistance equipment developed especially for Pilates. They are low-impact exercises—done sitting or lying down—and generally are safe for women of all ages.
Many fitness centers offer Pilates classes. Or you may prefer to find a teacher who offers one-on-one instruction. You even can learn Pilates exercises from a video in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
