Lamaze
Education for Expectant Mothers and Their Coaches
Lamaze is a method of childbirth in which the mother uses breathing techniques to
encourage delivery by relaxing at the proper time with respect to the involuntary
contractions of the abdominal and uterine muscles. Mothers who are able to use this
method of delivery require little, if any, anesthesia during delivery.
St. Mary's Offers Lamaze Classes
The Family Birthing Center at St. Mary's Hospital offers a variety of courses for
expectant mothers, Lamaze coaches, and siblings.
A 4-week Lamaze course for expectant mothers and their coaches is offered throughout
the year. Classes prepare expectant mothers for the childbirth experience and teach
support persons effective coaching techniques.
Weekend classes are designed for couples with busy weekday schedules. The Friday-Saturday
class is offered every month. A two-session refresher class is offered monthly.
Siblings will learn basic aspects of baby care in a one-session class that prepares
them for the arrival of a new baby. Sibling classes are offered every other month.
