Hysterectomy Quality Measures

Advanced techniques availability

Until recently, women have had few options other than hysterectomy for relief of fibroid symptoms. A newer approach that shrinks fibroids, called uterine artery embolization, is proving to be a safe and effective alternative (Current Opinion in Obstetrics and Gynecology, August 2005: 17(4); 329-332) (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, July 2004: 191(1); 22-31).

Uterine artery embolization has become a therapeutic alternative to hysterectomy for some patients (Current Opinion in Obstetrics and Gynecology, June 2004: 16(3); 239-243).

Uterine artery embolization is available as an alternative to hysterectomy for eligible patients at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center.
